KILIMANJARO CLIMBING

RATES VALID UNTIL DEC 2010

Mount Kilimanjaro is the crown of Tanzania. The view of this majestic mountain's gigantic snow-capped summit dome, rising high above the surrounding savannah is one of Africa's classic images. At 5896 metres (19,344 ft), Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and one of the highest volcanoes in the world, attracting trekkers and climbers from every corner of the world. The attraction is even greater because with time and adequate preparation, it is possible to walk all the way to the summit without technical mountaineering equipment or experience.

1. Marangu Route

Among the porters of Marangu Village, the Marangu Route is known as "Coca-cola" Route. Like the beverage, it’s highly popular. Probably ninety percent of all Kilimanjaro mountain climbers follow the Marangu route. Marangu route is very beautiful and one of the best things about Marangu route is that it is possible to stay in well built huts all the way up the mountain. The trail is good, not easily lost, and its fun to mingle with other climbers from all over the world. The Marangu route offers excellent wildlife watching as well as excellent views of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro's secondary summit.

2. Shira Route

This is an easy route, but the starting point, at the trailhead, is extremely high (3,500 meters). The route should only be attempted by those who are already acclimatized, or incredibly fit.

From the trailhead, the trail goes east, breaking out across the centre of the Shira Plateau, a weird, other-worldly place featuring beautiful rock towers and stunning views to the north, south and east. The view that prompted the American author Ernest Hemingway to call the top of Kilimanjaro “square”. (Hemingway stayed at a farm east of the Shira Plateau, between Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.)

Climbers using the Shira Plateau route often report sightings of elephants, buffalos, and other large game, as the animals regularly wander up the plateau’s north side in search of lush vegetation. This route is not recommended for first-time visitors to the mountain.

3. Rongai Route

The Rongai route is a very different experience when compared to the routes on the southwest side of the mountain. It is drier, it is covered with tall grass and there are no huts. The best thing about the Rongai route is that it offers spectacular views out over the broad, flat Maasai lands north of the Tanzania-Kenya border. These sweeping views rally give one a feel for what being on a high mountain in East Africa is really all about.

The Rongai route is currently the standard route on the north side of Kilimanjaro. The route joins the Marangu route at the Kibo hut, on the east side of Kibo. From there, the Normal route is followed to the summit. The hiking is easy, and very straight forward. It is probably the easiest route on the mountain.

The Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Moshi at Mountain Inn in time for an early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2

Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Rongai. The climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (1950m) on a small path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently, through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkeys. These monkeys are black with long “capes” of white hair and flowing white tail. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone (2600m) with extensive views over the Kenyan plains of Tsavo and Amboseli taking 3-4 hours. Overnight camp 1st Cave

Day 3

The morning walk is a steady ascent up the “Second Cave (3450m) with superb views of Kibo and Eastern icefields on the crater rim. Passing the second cave we reach the 3rd cave at 12000ft/3800m for overnight camp taking 3-4 hours. Overnight camp 3rd Cave

Day 4

Continue ascending on the east side of Kibo crossing the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo taking 4-5 hours to reach Kibo hut at 15000ft/4700m.. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night! Overnight camp Kibo.

Day 5

A long day and an early start for the summit on steep and heavy scree up to Gilmans’s Point at 18640ft/5681m on the crater rim to arrive in time for sunrise. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa at 19340ft/5896m, passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo is surprisingly fast and, after some refreshment, continue the descent to reach the final campsite at Horombo taking 11 to 15 hours. Overnight camp Horombo

Day 6

A steady descent down through moorland to Mandara Hut, the first stopping place at the Marangu route. Continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the Park gate at Marangu (1830m) taking 5-7 hours to be met and transferred to Mountain Inn for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7

Breakfast at Mountain Inn.

4. Umbwe Route

This route is easily one of the best experiences of a lifetime. It is breathtaking, wild, rough, and extremely steep in places. It displays Kilimanjaro’s wildly dramatic geological formations better than any other route on the mountain. From the gate at 1,400 metres, the trail winds up through the forest, following a ridge between two deep valleys. In many places, it is necessary to climb up sections of the trail by pulling yourself up on tree routes and branches. The trail continues of the ridge, and gets steeper and more interesting as it progresses up the mountain. In some places, the trail wanders along ledges with thousand metre drops of either side. At about the 3,200 metre-level, it is necessary to climb a short (10 meters) rock cliff. This cliff is only Grade I (rock climbing grade) and there is little exposure, but it requires rock climbing and pulling your way up a few branches and roots. Most visitors to Kilimanjaro have no problem with this section, even if they have never rock-climbed before.

The Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Moshi at Mountain Inn in time for an early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2

Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Umbwe for the first section of the climb through the forest along a narrow ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers to reach Bivouac No 1 at 9400ft/2800m taking for overnight camp taking 4-5 hours. Overnight Bivouc No 1 camp.

Day 3

Leaving the forest the path continues to follow the ridge, passing through heather and open moorlands to reach Barranco campsite at 13000ft/3900m for overnight camp taking 3-4 hours. Overnight Barranco camp

5. Machame Route

While the Marangu route is dubbed the “Coca-Cola Route”, the Machame Route is known as the “Whiskey Route.”. It’s more expensive to ascend, and its fantastic views are much more intoxicating.

The Machame Route, when combined with the Barafu Route on Kibo to the summit, and the Mweka Route as a descent through the forest (also known as the Machame-Mweka combination), is easily the best forest/moorland route for acclimatization on Kilimanjaro, as well as one of the most scenic outings on the mountain. It climbs slowly through the forest before emerging on the edge of the Shira Plateau and joining the Shira Plateau route, and then traverses the mountain taking in the south circuit trail with overnight stops at the Barranco campsite and Barafu campsite, before a slow grind up Kibo to the summit. Because of the slow ascent, this combination route has the highest rate of success of any route on the mountain. The Machame route, by itself, is also the second most beautiful route on the mountain, after the Umbwe route, and offers spectacular views of Mt. Meru, in Arusha National Park. There are only a couple of places where the trail gets steep.

The Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Moshi at Mountain Inn in time for an early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2

Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Machame for the first section of the climb through the lush forest to Machame campsite at 10000ft/3000m for overnight camp taking 5-7 hours. Overnight Machame camp

Day 3

Following the steep ridge and across heath and moorland to “picnic rock” and the Shira plateau, to Shura campsite at 12500ft/3800m for overnight camp taking 5-7 hours. Overnight Shira camp

Day 4

Heading towards Kibo, crossing a broad valley and climbing to a ridge crest, crossing scree slopes and river valley to reach Barranco campsite at 13000ft/3900m for overnight camp taking 5-7 hours. Overnight Barranco camp

Day 5

Cross the floor of the Great Barranco Valley, up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga river - the “last water” point on this route. A steep climb over rocky slabs to Barafu campsite at 15500ft/4600m for overnight camp taking8-9 hours. Overnight Barafu camp

Day 6

An early start for the summit - Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa at 19340ft/5896m taking 6-7 hours. Descend via Barafu campsite through the forest to Mweka campsite at 10000ft/3000m for overnight camp taking 5-7 hours. Overnight Mweka camp

6. Mount Meru Climb

Mountain Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, at 14979ft/4566m. It is overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, its famous neighbour, and frequently overlooked by visitors. But Meru is a spectacular mountain; a trek involves beautiful hiking through the forest and grassland on the mountain’s lower slopes, followed by a dramatic and exhilarating ridge-walk to the summit.

The Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Moshi at Mountain Inn in time for an early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek, dinner and overnight stay

Day 2

Drive to Arusha National Park Gate at Momella for the first section of the climb through the lush forest, crossing the Ngare Nanyuki River to reach Miriakamba Hut at 8337ft/2541m for overnight taking 4-5 hours. Overnight Miriakamba Hut.
